The Calabar Bitcoin Club was founded to introduce a parallel financial ecosystem where residents could address their daily financial challenges, which include: inflation, exclusion, censorship, remittance issues and other limitations of traditional financial systems. Bitcoin presents a solution, not just as money; it's about building a brighter money future for Calabar. We intend to Achieve this by promoting Bitcoin Adotpion via a Circular Economy, Educatoin and Skills development.
Vision:
To create a future for Calabar where individuals and businesses can confidently explore Bitcoin as a tool for money freedom, financial sovereignty and economic resilence. We hope to inspire the replication of successfull bitcoin circular economies in Nigeria and Africa.
Mission:
The Calabar Bitcoin Club is dedicated to fostering widespread understanding and adpotion of Bitcoin across Calabar by educating residents, supporting local merchants and building a strong circular economy on Bitcoin.
How it Began:
The club emerged out of passion from the bitcoin adoption work already being carried out by our founder James Otudor. Aggregation all his adoption work into a powerful force gave birth to the Calabar Bitcoin Club.
Milestones:
There are lots of Milestons achieved, let's list a few.
- Creation of a Secondary School Bitcoin Club in Local Public Schools in Calabar
- Supporting our founder James Otudor in the Bitcoin vs Nigeria court case; where he is currently suing the Nigerian government and several federal agencies who have infringed on the rights of Nigerian residents to own, use and trade bitcoin, as well as demanding that those rights be protected.
- Held three local meetups with 250+ people in attendance.
- Held a The Bitcoin Halving Festival which attracted over 10,000+ participants
- Hosted 4 sessions of 3omins Bitcoin only Radio programm.
- Published 2 Bitcoin articles on multiple national newspapers.
- Restructured the club to be self sustaining and empleyed 7 volunteers.
- Rented the Calabar Bitcoin Club Centre where physical businesses that supports a circular econmy will be operated.
- Onboarded 2 business to start accepting bitcoin as payments.
- Partnered with iPayBTC to bring bitcoin education to the campus community of University of Calabar, Nigeria
What Next?:
There are a lot in pipeline, below is a few which are closest to realisation:
- Monthly Merchant onboarding drive (minium of 10 in batches within a specific neighbourhood)
- Monthly 30 mins Radio Show
- Host Bitcoin Rap Cypher
- Quartely Bitcoin Bootcamp (mininum of 30 in a cohort)
- Establishment of a Shared workspace, game hub and cafe in the Club physical centre
- Hosting a Circular Economies Conference
