BTC Shule is pioneering a Bitcoin-powered circular economy in Winteko, Burundi, by leveraging Bitcoin to foster financial inclusion, renewable energy access, and education. The initiative aims to transform Winteko into a decentralized, financially autonomous community. By integrating Bitcoin with sustainable practices, BTC Shule seeks to create a replicable model for development across Africa.
Key project Components
- Bitcoin education and Financial inclusion: BTC Shule has launched educational programs across all households in Winteko, providing comprehensive knowledge about Bitcoin and its use for financial transactions. This initiative empowers residents with the tools needed for financial independence and long-term prosperity.
- Bitcoin-based rewards system: To motivate ongoing participation in educational programs, BTC Shule rewards community members with SATs (Satoshi) for engaging in learning activities. This reward system encourages community members to adopt and utilize Bitcoin as a daily tool for financial transactions.
- Supporting local entrepreneurship: BTC Shule is offering Bitcoin-backed grants to local entrepreneurs to stimulate business development and growth. This support fosters a strong local economy and promotes entrepreneurship within the community.
- Sustainable energy integration: BTC Shule is integrating solar energy to ensure that community members have access to sustainable and renewable power. This step helps reduce reliance on traditional power grids and promotes environmentally friendly energy use.
Model with local people
BTC Shule works closely with the parents of children in the community, focusing on sustainable agriculture. The model encourages each participant to grow their own garden at home, using vertical gardening techniques that allow for small-scale, efficient farming.
The key elements of the model are as follows:
-
Receiving Funds from Bitcoin donors: BTC Shule receives support from the donors to implement this project, ensuring that the local community can scale their agricultural efforts.
-
Training in vertical gardening: Community members are trained in vertical gardening techniques, which allow them to grow vegetables in small spaces. This practical knowledge equips them to become more self-sufficient and contribute to local food production.
-
Rewards in SATs: Participants are rewarded with SATs every two weeks for their progress. Those with well-maintained gardens are given additional SATs as an incentive to encourage the best gardening practices and community involvement.
-
Selling produce for SATs or Fiat: The produce grown in the gardens can be sold for SATs or Burundian Francs (BIF). Sellers are encouraged to convert their income into SATs, which can then be used for either saving or spending. This model helps build a circular economy, ensuring that Bitcoin is continually circulated within the community.
Long-Term Vision
BTC Shule’s ultimate goal is to scale the Bitcoin Circular Economy model to other villages and regions across Burundi and beyond. By creating a financially autonomous and environmentally sustainable community, BTC Shule envisions a future where Bitcoin-based development can be replicated across Africa, empowering local entrepreneurs, fostering financial sovereignty, and ensuring long-term sustainability for generations to come.
